CBT and Solution Focused Brief Therapist

How about now?

There is a very helpful quote by Lao Tzu that says “If you don’t change direction you might end up where you are headed”. Sometimes we can feel that we are not in a great place or that we are not going in a direction of our choosing, yet change is difficult, scary even. I believe that talking therapy can be immensely useful at these times. Sometimes we can’t see what the answers might be, what the other paths even look like but given space and time we can hear our own wisdom and make informed and wise choices. I see my role in therapy as helping people gain the tools to recognise that wisdom, and put it to good use in their lives.

Taking the first step can seem daunting, I get that, so congratulate yourself now for reading this far; progress happens one step at a time and you have already taken a first step.

How about now?

Often when people make the very brave decision to seek help they are then confronted with a waiting list sometimes of many months. I know that the doubt and uncertainty of waiting to see a therapist can be extremely unsettling; that is why if I can see you, I will typically see you within seven days of you contacting me. And if I can't see you, there's no waiting to find out; I will let you know by return of your email.

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a talking therapy that can help you manage your problems by changing the way you think and behave. CBT is based on the concept that your thoughts, feelings, physical sensations and actions are interconnected, and that negative thoughts and unhelpful behaviours can trap you in a vicious cycle. In therapy you will work towards your own goals, you're shown how to change negative patterns to improve your wellbeing. CBT is a very hands on practical therapy and you will learn techniques through the use of in session and home practice activities. In essence you are taught how to be your own therapist.

Solution Focused Brief Therapy

Solution Focused Therapy is a psychotherapeutic approach based on ‘solution-building’, as opposed to ‘problem-solving’. In this respect, it departs from the traditional psychotherapeutic assumption that a detailed understanding of the presenting problem; its formation, maintenance and resolution, is necessary for therapeutic change to take place. Rather, Solution Focused Therapy is a future-focused, goal-orientated approach, which focuses on exceptions (examples of when the ‘problem’ is not experienced), solutions (descriptions of what life will be like when the problem is gone) and the construction of scales to measure the client’s progress towards their solution.

The approach is consensual, pragmatic and, often, surprisingly brief.
